Savannah Brooke was the daughter of Thomas Tobia Brooke, a direct descendant of Robert Brooke, Colonial Governor of Maryland under the Calverts. Robert Brooke came to the colonies in 1650 on his own ship with his second wife, 8 children and 24 servants. Savannah L Brooke was born on April 8, 1854, in Volusia County, Florida, her father, Thomas, was 41, and her mother, Nancy, was 28. She died in 1910 in Volusia, Florida, at the age of 56.
At least three of Savannah's brother's served with the CSA for the State of Florida. Her brother, Barton Filmore Brooks would later become Sheriff of the County in 1885, following in the footsteps of his father Thomas T. Brooke who had been the county sheriff back in 1857.

USS Maria Denning (1858) was a steamer acquired by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was used by the Union Navy for various tasks, including carrying supplies, prisoners of war, and acting as a receiving ship for newly enlisted sailors or for sailors whose ship was sunk.

Side-wheel steamer Maria Denning, built at Cincin-
nati, Ohio, in 1858, was purchased by the Navy in 1861 for service as a transport, Comdr. Benjamin H. Dove in command.

Destined to carry provisions and stores, Maria Denning arrived at Cairo, Illinois, from St. Louis, Missouri, 26 November 1861, having dispersed two to four hundred Confederate cavalry at Price’s Landing en route. She was used as receiving ship at Cairo from 3 November 1861 to 1 April 1862, and protected Fort Holt from night attack by Confed-erate gunboats early in December 1861. In Nov-
ember 1862, Maria Denning took prisoners on board at Helena, Arkansas, before departing for Vicks-

She also served as receiving ship at Cairo, Illinois, from November 1861 to April 1862. Maria Den-ning was transferred to the Army in December 1862 and was used as a U.S. Army Transport from then until April 1863. She then returned to civilian pursuits, which lasted until she burned at Algiers, Louisiana, on 11 May 1866.
Thomas Tobias Brooke is a descendant of Robert Brooke, Colonial Governor of Maryland under the Calverts.Robert Brooke came to the colonies in 1650 on his own ship with his second wife, 8 children and 24 servants.

Biography
-
Thomas was born in 1734. Thomas Brooke ... He passed away in 1789. [1]
-
-
Thomas Brooke, the eldest child of Thomas Brooke and Judith Briscoe Brooke, was born in Prince George's County in 1734. After the death of his father in 1749 he was completely orphaned and records show that he was raised by his grandmother, Lucy (Smith) Brooke, his maiden aunts, Rachael and Rebecca, and his bachelor uncle, Isaac Brooke. Following his uncle to Upper Frederick County, Maryland, he eventually succeeded his uncle and, when Washington County was formed from Frederick County in 1776, Thomas Brooke became First Surveyor of Washington County, which office he held until his death in 1789.
-
On January 24, 1775, Thomas Brooke of Frederick County, Maryland, was appointed on a Committee of Observation with full powers to act to prevent any infraction of and to carry into execution the Resolves of the Continental Congress and Provincial Convention. Thomas Brooke, representing Elizabeth Town District, Washington, County, continued on this committee after February 1776 when he was made Clerk of the Committee, then Chairman of the Committee of Observation on January 18, 1777. According to the will of Thomas Brooke, of Washington County, it evidences divisible interest in the estate of DANN. This tract of 4,000 acres was granted to his great- grandfather, Col. Thomas Brooke, 28 July 1694 (Annapolis, MD, Land certificates, Lib. B.23, fol. 223-4). It now includes some of the best residence and the Rock Creek Park section of the nation's capital.

Candace B. Otte wrote " I am also a descendant of Thomas Brooke who was born in Maryland about 1748 [actually 1734-rgg] and died at Hagerstown, Maryland, in 1789 and his wife Elizabeth. They had three sons: Thomas born about 1860, William Pitt Brooke ... and Clement Brooke who married Ann Dillon and moved to Zanesville, Ohio; they also had several daughters. I have a copy of a letter written by Clement Brooke in 1802 to the stepfather of his nephew, Thomas Brooke, born in South Carolina about 1787." Also, "This letter was found many years earlier stuffed into the wall of the old Brooke home in Volusia County, Florida. There was also a badly torn copy of the Will of Thomas Brooke of Hagerstown, Maryland, father of Thomas, William and Clement....It has been a long and difficult search to trace this line because the Thomas Brooke who came south died early, leaving a minor son also named Thomas, and his wife remarried. This Thomas also died young leaving a wife, a son named Thomas Tobias Brooke and three daughters. His wife remarried and had additional children by her third husband. She also had three daughters by her first husband and I have not yet found her maiden name. These remarriages made following this family from South Carolina to Georgia to Florida through census records a difficult task ....'
