Herbert Hoyl Macomber
Herbert Hoyl Macomber was born in Jacksonville, Fl. April 8, 1901 to Calvin Macomber and Bessie Mae Giddings Macomber. Calvin was a Jacksonville city policeman. On May 1, 1901, the night Jacksonville burned, Bessie wrapped Herbert in a dish towel and with her husband Calvin and four older children, Ida 11, Inez 8, Clarence 6 and Floy 3, they fled from the fires. The city paid the train fare for the family to travel to Missouri where they stayed temporarily with Bessie's brother Hiram.
As a young man "Herbie" learned the plastering trade as did most of the men in this family. Among many other buildings in Miami, Herbie helped plaster the Emory Riddle Building.
Ola Macomber, Betty Macomber and Alice Ramirez
Mom Alice: "Ola and Betty were visiting from Miami. My dad probably took the picture cause he would often tell us to do something interesting or silly. At this time mom Mabel and dad Tony worked in differrent cigar factories all day. Mom walked 2-3 blks to school. After school a black lady named Ruby would for care of her til parents came home. They had a cow named Peggy. One time Peggy got her tail caught in the clothesline.Ruby calmed Peggy down. Neighbor named Glover came and freed her. Ruby gave mom warm milk right from Peggy but mom didn't like it."
