When the family would come to visit Ira Christopher Starling at Jackson Memorial Hospital they would have to visit through the windows because they weren't allowed inside because they could catch the TB from the patients. Martha "Martie" Carolyn Starling Russell and Robert "Bobby" Alan Russell rode the bus to see Ira Christopher Starling at the hospital because they did not have a car during the war.

Ira Christopher Starling died at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, from TB, at the age of 60, on April 21, 1945 at 1:25 A.M. Ira Christopher Starling had been at Jackson Memorial Hospital for 4 months. His wife, Della Jones Starling, was 47 at the time of his death. Bess Funeral Home handled the services. The funeral charges were $70.00. (Linda Crompton has a copy of the funeral home's bill). There was a service for Ira Christopher Starling in Miami, Florida and one in Holly Hill, Florida on April 23 at 3:00 P.M., with Rev. McGarvey.

Ira Christopher Starling is buried at Shady Rest Cemetery, in Holly Hill, Florida, in space 4, lot 153. Baggett Summer Funeral Home held the services. The informant at the time of death was Kenneth B. Bess of 1326 North West 7 Avenue, Miami, Florida. Ira's death certificate is #7244, Volume 1143. Linda Crompton has a copy of the death certificate for Ira Christopher Starling.
Ira Christopher Starling's Illness

In Ira Christopher Starling's letters around the end of 1944 he stated he was in St. Augustine. Ira had TB and was in the hospital there because that is where the FEC Railroad sent him for treatment. He stayed there for awhile under the care of Dr. Walk. While Ira Christopher Starling was there they discovered he also had asthma.
Ira Christopher Starling said in his letters that he had the best nurses in the world, they were very good to him, the food was good, and he did not want for anything. Ira Christopher Starling had to stay in bed all the time, which he did not like. He was only allowed to go to the toilet which was only about 10 steps.

Ira Christopher Starling came back to Miami after being in the hospital inSt. Augustine around December 1944. He went into Jackson Memorial Hospital. Jackson Memorial Hospital had the patient's that had TB in separate wooden building on the grounds of the hospital. There was no air conditioning in these buildings, but there were large screened windows.

Grace Calhoun "Sug" Tucker Starling

Birth: Mar. 12, 1916
Georgetown
Putnam County
Florida, USA
Death: Mar. 14, 2016
Ocala - Grace Calhoun Tucker Starling, whom everyone lovingly called 'Sug', entered the Church Triumphant after a brief illness. Sug was born in Georgetown in Putnam County, Florida, the third of seven children. Her parents, John Calhoun Tucker and Lula Mae Long Tucker, came from entirely different worlds and Sug became equally at home in both. Roots on the Tucker side went back to South Carolina and the settled antebellum planter class. From those roots came a unique relationship to her dignified Confederate veteran grandfather that, at an early age, gave Sug a sense

of history. On her mother's side, The Longs were yeomen farmers who migrated from North Carolina to farm land that is now within the Ocala National Forest. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings later immortalized Sug's grandfather, Calvin Long, as the boy Jodie in her classic 1939 novel of Florida frontier life, The Yearling.
Sug's parents moved to Miami when she was in her infancy. Her memories of her father, who died of a lingering illness when she was eleven, are tender and happy. From her widowed mother she, along with her sisters, learned the work ethic and self-reliance that stayed with her all her life.
She graduated from Miami Edison High School as one of only two in the family to do so. Before it was fashionable for women, she joined the workforce so to help provide for her younger siblings. Family life and the strong influence of the local Methodist Church shaped her strong convictions and were the determining influences of her life.
In 1939, she married Ira Carroll Starling whose career in finance took him to West Palm Beach, where Carroll Jr. was born and then to Orlando, where she gave birth to Bruce, Susan and Alan. Sug got a taste of the military when her husband entered the Navy in 1944. In 1945, the family relocated to join him in Norfolk, Virginia. This was the only time she resided outside Florida.
After the war Carroll went into the automobile business working, first as a general manager in Ocala, then in his own successful dealership in Kissimmee. When, in 1975, after 15 years of operating a successful automobile dealership in Kissimmee, her husband died suddenly, she became the corporation's vice president, a role she held for the rest of her life. Today, three of her grandsons currently operate Chevrolet dealerships in central Florida.
Over the years she was an active reader of history and an eager traveler, journeying to the Virgin Islands, Europe and the British Isles, Virginia, Hawai'i, New England, and California. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and never missed an opportunity to share in the milestone events of each new generation. Her oldest grandson recently described her as the model example of the 'greatest generation.'
As the matriarch of an extended family, she leaves to cherish her memory her four children and their spouses, ten grandchildren and their spouses, nineteen great-grandchildren, and numerous in-laws by marriage on three continents and in five nations.
Sug will be remembered for her energy and enthusiasm, her gratitude for every little kindness, her ability, in all situations, to see the silver lining, and her love for her children, their spouses, their children and their children's children.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made in Sug's name to a charity of choice or to Vitas Hospice, 2201 Lucien Way, Suite 100, Maitland, FL 32751. A Memorial Service will be held for Grace Starling at 11 am, Friday, March 18th at the Osceola Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Kissimmee with a reception to follow in the funeral Home. LETTERS IN THE CAN
One time when Ella Mary Starling Herring was a little girl, she was at Martha Elizabeth Purdom Jolly Starling's home. Martha Starling was sick in bed and Ella Mary Starling Herring was staying there to help Martha Starling. Martha Starling had hung a can, from an old ice cream maker, behind the dresser in her bedroom. Martha Starling told Ella Mary Starling Herring to get the container and bring it to her, which Ella Mary did. There were letters in the can and Martha Starling asked Ella Mary to read them out loud to her. Ella Mary seemed to think they were love letters written to Martha Starling from her first husband, William James Jolly. After Ella Mary read them to Martha Starling, she had Ella Mary place them back in the container and hang them behind the dresser. Ella Mary was not sure if Mr. Jolly died or they separated, but Martha was still thinking about him. (Linda Dianne Herring Crompton found out that they were divorced.)

Martha Elizabeth Purdom Jolly Starling

When Roland Rufus Starling first died, Martha Elizabeth Purdom Jolly Starling lived by her self. Her home was in Holly Hill, Florida and did not have runing water in the house. There was a flow well, just outside the kitchen door. The yard had a big wooden picket fence around it. There were big oak trees in the front yard. This home was not near the beach.
Martha Starling was a person of good morals.
There was a white family, near the corner from Martha Starling, that had two sons who drank alot. Martha called the sons, "Rot gut Charlie" and "Pukey Blackie".
Martha Starling was living in Holly Hill when her son William Joseph Starling married Inez Louise Conrad.
Martha Starling did not work after Roland Starling died. I don't know if the children helped with money or if she was able to support her self.
Martha Starling lived in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1948 when Laura Nettie Purdom LaFollett left 1/2 of her estate to be divided among her 9 siblings and their heirs.
At one time there was a man that lived with Martha Starling. Ira Christopher Starling, Martha's son, paid him to take care of Martha because she was not able to care for her self.
Martha Purdom Starling & Martha Carolyn Starling's Trip to New York

Told to Linda Dianne Herring Crompton by Martha Carolyn Starling Russell:

In 1929, Ira Carroll Starling Sr. got passes to go to New York for his daughter, Martha Carolyn Starling (Russell), and his mother, Martha Elizabeth Purdom Jolly Starling, to visit Homer & Rosella Bennett. Rosella Bennett was Ira's sister. Ira Carroll said his mother, Martha, would not know how to handle traveling on the train, so that is why he sent his daughter, Martha, with her. Everything went well on the trip. Della Jones Starling was sure to let the Bennett's know, ahead of time, that they were coming. They were met at the Pennsylvania train station by the Bennett's. When they got ready to go back home, Rosella Bennett packed them a lunch and pears to take on the train. When they got to Washington, D.C. they had to change trains. Martha was 12 and she had to get her grandmother, Martha Starling, age 77, and the luggage off the train. The pears had rotted in the paper bag and the bottom fell out, making a mess on the train. Martha was trying clean them up when the porter came through and said the train was going to switch right away, and that they had to get off the train now. So Martha left the garbage and got off the train. Martha got a porter to help make sure they got on the right train from there. This was a two day trip.
